Challenges of windy weather fishing have presented themselves loud and clear the past several days, when you rise to the challenge, it can really make your day!
After a storm the fishing tends to come back strongly, once the water has started to clear and the fish can see to feed. So a bit of time spent in preparation now can mean some prolific catches on the near horizon. Or simply go fishing โ but with some modifications, such as heading for estuaries and shallows out of the prevailing wind. Snapper are feeding in just a few metres of water all around the place. They’re waiting for a little temptation like a soft bait or similar to waft gently, slowly into viewโฆstrike time!
There have been reasonably good workups in the Firth of Thames with some good kingfish to be caught in the general area of them. Not necessarily in among the quick-fire action of here, there then over there, as the kahawai and kings chase their next meal.
Mussel farms have been providing great pannies, a good time for kayakers to be fishing them at the moment.
Skipjack tuna are in the gulf. Theyโre there so as soon as that wind drops enough,get out and find them. Catching them on light gear is always a great way to add some anticipation and adrenaline to a day out in the gulf.
Water temps are stable and high so spread out drift fishing is working well in the 35m zone. Consequently no real need to hunt down major surface activity, just casually drifting along. Using smaller lures, soft baits and such has been a good solid approach to coming home with fresh fish. Some on the spot taxes by the way of sharks may well be encountered, such is life.
Stormy weather but need a fishing fix? Seek shelter and fish the perhaps more unusual areas like estuaries, the ultra shallows with small soft baits on lightweight jigheads, before or after work for a few peaceful and sometimes very exciting few hours.
