Skipjack to walk on!
From Tiri to Kawau and most of the gulf it seems like.
On a really a calm day it sure looks amazing. So fishy, yet the little tuna can ignore your offerings like the best of them. You’ll find a few helpful tips are in this week’s Where’s The Fish video for catching these fantastic fish. Skipjack are a thrilling fish to catch. They never give up and on light tackle their runs are eye wateringly fast and your reel is just a blur! If looked after correctly (bled and iced immediately) they make superb sashimi or tuna steaks (cooked medium rare) on the BBQ.
Kingfish
Kingfish are still doing well in terms of bite, long may that last. Whether you’re targeting them around marker poles or reefs, they are in eating mode. As long as there aren’t too many sharks in the same place you should land them.
Snapper
Lots of little ‘uns racing in to feed a lot of the time, the 25 – 35cm brigade. Late summer is a challenging time at times to get the premium snapper. Slow and steady wins the race – use your kabura. However with the change to Autumn imminent their feeding urge will surge any day now, be prepared!
Marlin
Marlin have been spotted in the areas close to the outer Hauraki Gulf. I would suspect there are one or two that have already slipped in under our noses – time to try for one in the gulf? Elsewhere the season is pretty good and there is still time if you wish to tick a Stripey or a Blue off your fish list.
Watch out for the taxman
Sharks – all over the show, from hammerheads sunbathing to big bronzies. Annoyingly taking all the fish you can hook and serve to them on your retrieve. Good luck with negotiations with the taxman.
Workups
Young gannets around the place are getting their bearings, workup wonders are not far away out in the gulf. However various shorelines like those of Rangitoto and Nth Shore bays have been subject to ‘just add water’ style shallow water workups over recent days. Birds thumping in after tiny baitfish, erupting instantly and moving fast along in just a metre or so of water, such a captivating spectacle.
Have an open mind and be prepared
A great time of year to go out fishing is upon us and an open mind to what species will present a good bite for the day helps. It pays to be prepared for a few varieties and methods to both target and land the feeding fish. With more cyclones looming on the horizon, it’s time to go catch fish!
Enjoy!
