Yes – snapper are back on the bite big time!
What a difference a day (or two) can make. Following on from the Super-moon softening of general fishing activity last week, snapper are again feeding well for long periods of the day. The main Hauraki Gulf activity moved a little further out against the more general inwards flow of fish. The action has been found more into the mid-ground area of 45m over the last few days. This follows some intense feeding in the inner 30m-35m zone. Increased bird activity on the surface has spread over much of the middle gulf. The birds above hold some excellent fishing down below with the food chain rattling loud and clear.
Catching the attention of the bigger snapper by using bigger offerings has been working well. Consistent 10lb+ snapper have readily attacked the bigger 100gm to 200gm lures. Lures are hit hard and aggressively on the drop. Using the big guns when the bite is good virtually eliminates catching the smaller thirty-something-centimetre snapper.
Inner channels of the Waitemata are already starting to provide some action.ย An early season start for sure, and there are a lot more snapper on their way in!
A number of sharks are making their presence known in terms of sudden slack-lines or half a fish being boated out in the gulf. It’s a thrill when you hook them โ enjoy the ride, it may be brief.
When the going is good, itโs time to get going!
Enjoy,
Espresso.
