Snapper fishing in the Hauraki Gulf. It’s an early season for sure, water temperatures are up, they are in roe, everything is well under way.
Workups have moved right in to the Tiri-Kawau area this week. Some very exciting visual displays of uncountable gannets, shearwaters and terns all in hectic aerial bombardments. These workups are right into the Rangitioto channel on some days, here one day gone the next.
More mackerel than you can poke a stick at moving around the southern Whangaparaoa peninsula lately.
Good fishing is on the cusp in the inner channels like Motuhie and Rangitoto, further in snapper fishing wont be far away. The area north of Waiheke and the Ahaas is a good place to drift fish. Whether birds are active or not, there still lots of pannies around. Further out by Little and Great Barrier there is still consistently good fishing especially for kingfish. These fish are are hounding the pilchards along southern Gt Barrier area. Kingfish are also in with the baitschools of the 40m depth past Tiri. Catching them is huge fun on snapper gear. Bright, luminous big action lures are catching the bigger fish, get into them.
When Mother Nature smiles
Whales of various species abound and we all need to be aware of them and show full respect. We are on their turf, not the other way around. Just this week I have been in awe of a massive Blue whale, a couple of Brydes and possibly a very rare Minke. Each so incredible to see and be in the presence of. They use sound just like dolphins to find and hunt prey. Consequently excessive boat traffic, sounders etc all can hinder their attempts at a meal and localized workups can vanish as a result. Take your time to enjoy their spectacle if you are lucky enough to encounter these amazing mammals.
