Whether it’s by land, by sea, or by air, there is some great fishing to be had now.

Orca and kingfish have the same idea this weekโ€“ hunt in close, very close, shoreline stuff. The North Shore bays have been treated to close encounters of the Orca kind the past few days, and kingfish have been caught in the shallowest of water alongside various inner gulf islands like Tiri and southern Kawau. Not just here but further afield as well along the southern Great Barrier Island rocks. Top water heaven! Kingfish are also rampaging after pilchard schools with their smaller (but still big) cousins – kahawai. There’s been a lot of this action just north of Tiri tiri island over wide areas, thrilling visuals and thrilling hook-ups too.ย  200gm jigs are the go here.

The snapper bite has been cooling down as the water temperature continues to slide. However when the workups are on, they are a jaw-dropping spectacle. The snapper oblige most of the time (but not always) with their presence underneath. However some good snapper are still being caught simply on the drift in the general 40m zone using smaller offerings when possible. Kaburaโ€™s and micro jigs are doing very well even when the fish arenโ€™t that interested in feeding, slow and steady can win the race.

Be prepared, but be open-minded. Have a light, medium and heave set all set up and ready to go, then you can change very quickly to adjust to what’s happening. Catch more fish, and certainly the bigger fish, by using the right gear at the right time.

Enjoy!
