Lee Kennedy’s recent crack at the Jones’ Bay Red Beach Snapper Comp proved challenging but with its rewards.
“It was bloody rough, mate, the Jones’ Bay Red Beach Snapper, Comp,” he said. “But plenty of fish. I probably caught 100 fish, mostly of the smaller variety.”
“Still one was large enough to take out second place, so that’s alright.
“My fish was a faction over 4kg with the winning fish going about 5kg.
“Most of my fish took a kabura or that new white Beta Bug, which I like to hang straight out of the rod holder and let the kayak action do the work.”
Post cyclone
One the cyclone passes through Kennedy’s next trip is to a New Zealand Kayak Fishing Group’s Open Invite trip to Coromandel. 50 or 60 are booked to attend, and you can read more details on this link: NZ Kayak Fishers Open Invite.
Into the shallows
Another trip in the pipe is a land-based session out to Rangitoto. Like Grant Bittle, Kennedy believes now is the time to hit the shallows. The evening will be the time. Stay quiet and fish that change of tide. Even fishing as shallow as 2 ½ metres will produce the goods if you know what you are doing.
