Leading up to the recent full moon the kingfish bite was crazy good, the whole 9 yards in fact. It was a case of couldn’t miss!

And it wasn’t only the kingfish. Snapper and others as well, both in and out of the workup torrents in the 35m zone. Then the inevitable brakes were tested – in the form of much shorter bite times. Still great fishing but not all the time every time. Now the moon is more co-operative, Spring in full swing, optimistic forecasters – the only thing missing is you 😊 , or not!

Orcas have been delighting those humans lucky enough to enjoy their scrutineering, even if somewhat nervous during direct eye contact along with their fascinatingly seductive smile, teeth ‘n all. Similarly big Bottle Nose dolphins are enthralling all (except those wanting to catch fish at the time it the vicinity!) that happen across a pod of these up-sized dolphins, in the shallows they are even more imposing, and also a dampener on any bite that was happening in the area.

Where’s The Fish?

Whangaparaoa Bay has been thoroughly rewarding for most fishing, whether the gannets are there or not. Out a bit further into the 40m+ depths from Nth Waiheke the workups have moved, more so than previously. Firth of Thames has been good – you may need to search around a bit more than 2 weeks ago though. The inner Nth Shore confines have calmed down, just as well, the drop in work output from office workers gazing at workups to Tradies ‘job and finish’ i.e. early knock-off took precedence for many.

Increasing tidal current up to and over the weekend and with some perky winds forecast could make things interesting in terms of chop out wider, but in close where a lot of good snapper are should be well fishable.

Inner Waitemata channels could be worth a try – at least if the sea state is willing in the more sheltered areas. Very early days yet but with this recent surge inwards around the bottom end (of Waiheke), and a LOT of activity from Tiri in to western Rangitoto over the past few weeks there are plenty of snapper ready and lying in wait. So perhaps some favourite summer haunts are worth an early excursions? A flick of a few little light headed softies in the shallows?

Water temperatures are climbing steadily, the fish exchange is under way – barracouta out and skipjack in along with their oversized predators in tow, we wait (im)patiently.
