Short sharp and sweet this week – a lot like fishing opportunities right now,
a few hours fishing at a time possible as front’s pass and the wind swings on the tide – opportunity knocks quickly. Beautiful to see the mercury steel of an unblemished surface tension with zero wind, miles and miles of cool chrome sea, the plop plop of some gannets, or the fluttering squawking chase of petrels and terns over mackerel schools around the inner gulf/Waitemata clearly audible. The next day or even an hour or two later – complete still, no signs of life, above on or below the sea skin. Winter.
Kaburas are very effective generally speaking out over much of the gulf and in similar depths waters in most places, but remember those other delicious menu items, otherwise coming home with fresh fish might be more of wishful thinking than fish-full. Snapper a prime target not only gets lethargic in interest to bite, or seemingly an inability to even notice your offering… think of this as good. Wait, what? Why? Well because you now know at least what they don’t want – likely they’ll bite something else if you have it ready in your tackle box. If you have fish on the sounder or otherwise know they’re there find out what makes them Tik tok (@captainespresso ) and bring out your box of fish-tricks. A silvery sided slow pitch jig like a Boss or even Double Trouble just hanging in the rod holder about 1-2 metres off the sea floor (1 – 2 full turns of the handle) on a slow drift has been the hot ticket over the mid ground…bigger snapper, consistent hookups from solid strikes, outdoing the more typical slow jigs and micros surprisingly. More consistent snapper action is well out in the gulf if you can get there, Colville and Craddock channels.
Kingfish excitement on your agenda? Definitely check this out, it’s simply amazing what can be caught day trippin’ around the Hauraki Gulf, and the scenery, everything is just ‘wow’! Moon Tide Fishing on TV:
