The winter fishing signs are very good – are you prepared?

The gentle hum of fishermen preparing fishing gear is near audible well into the evening from sheds, garages, boats and living rooms. Fingers crossed the forecast of fine fishing weather materialises! The moon is good, the sun is shining. Although the water temperature has plummeted the winter fishing signs are good, very good. Winter fishing benefits greatly from a bit of extra preparation. Specifically several layers of warmth and a hot thermos! These go a long way to making the day out memorable one for the right reasons.

In close you can expect to get onto a few good snapper specimens early morning, (even in the downtown channels I hear). However further out expect some well conditioned fish, including some better sized models to be welcomed aboard. Drift fishing out in 40m north of Waiheke is a pretty reliable place to be right now. And who knows โ€“ if the dolphins and whales latch on to some of those big pilchards the kahawai have been chasing down and scoffing, a workup or two could well explode and provide a fast bin full! Big kahawai are on the rampage.

Along the North Shore bays there have been dolphins and birds working this past week. I would expect both baitfish and other bigger predators to be there still.

The planets are doing their best to align for some great winter fishing, itโ€™s our duty to go and find out!

Best of luck, enjoy your fishing and taking that classic big winter fish picture.
