Winter has officially arrived, which means some enjoyable fishing.
The arrival of winter heralds some of the year’s most entertaining fishing. You just need to get out there and experience it for yourself.
Workups have been exciting to watch with the entire food chain in full swing. This has been pumping up the volume with fast and furious fishing both out in the wider gulf (45-50m) and into just 5m elsewhere. Definitely entertaining fishing at the moment! Closer in to shore the sea has come alive with so many seabirds low-flying across huge areas of fish splashing the surface. Baitfish like anchovy are being hunted down by mackerel, kahawai and of course the birds. Often big kahawai are within easy eyesight of land just meters off the shore seemingly surfing the waves. So very tempting to down tools and just going fishing! The next day you might find an eerie quiet in the same area as the fish can move around significantly.
So even with windy weather there’s still some very good inshore fishing to be had, targeting monster mackerel that measure well over a foot long. If you want to target the mackerel, use your micro jigs. Even bigger kahawai and some snapper in excellent condition amongst them if you can get onto them. Snapper can’t resist the lighter 28gm L’ll squidwings at the moment.
The weather is changing rapidly, both for better and for worse. Therefore it pays to be ready and perhaps explore different areas taking note of wind direction and strength. One thing for sure, there are some great days of fishing to be experienced in the next few weeks if you can swing it.
Cheers,
Espresso.
