Whether it’s the work ups further off shore, or those close to the shoreline, they are a wonderful sight as we know what they signal.

Waiheke Island has been one of the hot spots lately. While targeting winter snapper it’s showing plenty of action on alternate days. Well into the middle area of the Firth of Thames is also showing surprisingly hot action. At times small workups being rather productive. This area also has had the benefit of a bit of shelter with the prevailing SW winds of late.

Some tantalising workups have been seen off the shores of Orewa, Hatfields and a few other well populated stretches of shoreline around the gulf. These have caused a fair bit of anxiety in the mornings, as many humans head off to their land based duties for the day. It’s somewhat hard leaving behind the wonderful sights and sounds of gannets. Especially as they dive into baitfish schools โ€“ sometimes in mere metres of water. The action has been so shallow the gannets havenโ€™t needed to get airborne. Preferring simply to duck their head down into the baitfish just below the surface.

Dolphins have been all over the place chasing pilchards. Sometimes covering vast areas in a day and making for challenging times for the workup chasers.

The southern Great Barrier region though has held all the ingredients for solid fishing for quite some time now. Both in terms of food supply and water temperatures. Not every day is hero day out there, but more often than not. The middle ground of the Hauraki Gulf is slow, but slow and steady fishing has its reward. These are typical kabura-style days catching pannie snapper and a fair share of gurnard too with a very slow drift eastern side of the cable zone.

In this weeks video, learn how to set your drag when soft bait fishing to avoid breaking line and losing lure and fish.

Big tides and a good moon are upon us โ€“ half a chance? Be out there, the winter fishing is still good.

Cheers,
Espresso.
